EBECHO MUSLIMOVA at Magenta Plains
Through Feb 11th

Ebecho Muslimova is a New York-based artist who makes strikingly graphic paintings and drawings using sense of humor and absurd. The subject of her work is an alter ego named “Fatebe”, who finds herself in various impossible situations. One works features Fatebe as a genie inside a jar of coins, gagged by a stack of quarters. Another, as Narcissus poised over a pool of still water while folded into the angles of a laundry drying rack. Using minimalist, black and white graphic lines, Muslimova uses the female body as a malleable, expressive form, roasting shame and anxiety on a spit. Every curve glistens.

When I encounter an individual or family facing inequality I create visibility through images and story-telling to expose the violation of their human rights.". Three bodies of work are presented in this show, Including Frazier's best-known body of work, The Notion of Family (2001-2014); an exploration into her family, her hometown, and her own experiences through landscape and portraiture in the de-industrialized steel town of Braddock, PA.

The use of light in contemporary art

    Picture
     Dan Flavin

By just using light, and its ways of reflecting and refracting, contemporary artists managed to create incredible works of art. The Chelsea galleries are open to the broad public, for whoever wishes to witness such creations. It is recommended not to miss this artistic event because you may not see one alike for a while. In case you are a fan of Drake, or just by pure curiosity, just look at his video, called “Hotline Bling”. The reason for using this video as an example is because it uses light effects to offer the surrounding environment a particular note. In its essence, the video is rather simple, but the continuous play with different shades of colored light on the walls gives it a futuristic appearance. It is highly possible that for the making of the video, the work of James Turrell may have been used as inspiration.

If you want to see the work of James Turrell, famous for his work of art concerning light and space, the Chelsea galleries are welcoming you. Dan Flavin is another fantastic artist that uses light to put an extraordinary value in a particular space. If James Turrell loves playing with shades of light, especially of different color tones, on a wider surface, Flavin enjoys playing with fluorescent light fixtures. The truth is that both manage to offer spectacular results, helping the viewer feeling like walking into a parallel world. The entire tour in the galleries will stimulate your visual sense in a way it has never been before. If you have been used to visiting art galleries that contain paintings or sculptures, maybe it is time to experience something new and very exciting.

Light is very permissive when used in art since it can create an incredibly wide range of artistic manifestations. It is really up to the way the artist chooses to use light because the outcome can be breathtaking. Light was always used in a creative manner, to create a unique environment, throughout history. Just remember the large cathedral windows, with painted glass, which used to transmit light into the cathedral in a spectacular manner. The use of light got a different meaning in modern art with the appearance of the incandescent light sources. Ever since then, artists never stopped experimenting with the variety of tools that the developing technology offered them. What the Chelsea galleries are offering is the ultimate result of use of light in contemporary art. These are the finest pieces made by some of the most appreciate artists in this artistic niche.

It is time for you to do the same and add every possible experience to your timeline. One day you will become a better you.
